"2000 Light Years From Home" may or may not be your favorite Rolling Stones song, but it is definitely one of their weirdest. It originally appeared on their 1967 psychedelic rock album Their Satanic Majesties Request. Of course being 13 in 1967 and having very little money to buy rock albums yet, and without an FM radio underground channel yet to exist in this area, I wouldn't hear this song until I was 15 in 1969. By that time there were two underground stations to choose from. It was following a set of early Pink Floyd, the last song being Syd Barrett's marvelous science fiction, outer space opus, "Interstellar Overdrive," that the deejay played this selection, "2000 Light Years From Home." At first I thought I was still listening to Pink Floyd, until I realized the vocal was quite different from Barrett's style. Of course I was blown out of my socks to find out this was The Rolling Stones, and very happy indeed I had my reel-to-reel recording it all.

What I didn't know yet, and would find out soon, was that the song had been re-released on a Rolling Stones greatest hits album, "Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits, Vol. 2)." I also was aware from news reports that the group's founder, Brian Jones, had died, found drowned at the bottom of his swimming pool. What I would find out is that this octagon-shaped LP was dedicated to him. In my mind, "2000 Light Years rom Home," the only non-hit in the compilation, was in some manner a commentary on Brian's death.

In any event, The Rolling Stones have proven, over the years, just how versatile a group they can be. Sadly, most fans focus on the 90% of their material devoted to hard driving R&B rock, but they could do everything from ballads, straight southern blues, choral compositions, jazz instrumentals, country rock, and yes ... they could do psychedelic-era Pink Floyd just as good as Pink Floyd. Here then is their sci-fi based classic, dedicated to Brian Jones, including a segment from the original music video and synced to the sound track, along with some short film footages from the best sci-fi film ever made, Ridley Scott's "Alien." So strap yourselves in for a bumpy jaunt through space and time, and set your controls for "2000 Light Years From Home" ... by one of the greatest rock bands ever, The Rolling Stones.
