Hailed as a child prodigy, Arshad Ali Khan started singing before he started talking. At the tender age of 4 years he was already well versed in over 40 ragas. His performances even at that age portrayed such maturity, depth and understanding of ragas that he came to be known as 'Chotay Ustad" meaning 'Little Virtuoso'. His talent and genius was harvested and nurtured by his uncles Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. At the age of 6 he was the youngest person to be admitted into the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and was celebrated as the youngest 'scholar' in the Academy history. Not a day went by when Arshad Ali Khan did not submerge himself into the discovery of music and the strict cultivation of his voice which easily spans over two octaves. His daily riyaaz has been described by his peers as resembling a humble sage offering deep reverence to the deities who have blessed him with the boon of music. He has cultivated his voice to such levels that he is capable of offering deep gamaks even in lower octaves where most singers dare not venture. The effortlessness with which he travels over octaves all the while maintain the character and chalan of the raag which he sings is mind boggling.
