The Arkansas Society of Freethinkers is proud to present the award-winning investigative journalist Mara Leveritt. Mara is the author of "The Boys on the Tracks," which explores the cover-ups and corruptions in the investigation of the 1987 murders of two teenage boys in Saline County, Arkansas, and "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three" which comprehensively details the case of three teenagers who were falsely accused and wrongfully imprisoned for the heinous murders of three eight-year old boys. Both of Mara's books have won the prestigious Booker Worthen prize, which is awarded annually to the best work, fiction or non-fiction, by an author living in central Arkansas. "Devil's Knot" has been adapted to a feature film starring Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon that is set for release at the end of this year. In 2012, Mara was awarded a Lamen fellowship, enabling her to continue her work studying the lives of the newly-released West Memphis Three.

The title of Mara's talk is "Authority in Arkansas" in which she will introduce the West Memphis Three as a case-study in the failures of critical thinking, followed by a discussion of the risks and harms encountered by individuals in cultures that discourage critical thinking.
