Press Briefing at Pompton Lakes, 10-28-2012. (Transcript Below)
"Given my typical subtlety and understatement... I mean listen--I said this yesterday. If something looks like it's stupid to do, it is stupid. Staying on the barrier islands for 36 hours of hurricane-force winds of 75 mph or more, sustained, not gusting, is stupid, and, you know, I think all of our mothers taught us if we could avoid it don't be stupid, so don't be stupid. Get out, and go to higher, safer ground, you know? I just don't know any other way to put it I guess. I've used one line already. I'm not going to reuse it, so the fact is these folks need to get out of the barrier islands, and I know there will always be people, and I know these folks. I've spoken to these folks who are always smarter, and because the damage in Irene was less to the barrier islands they're saying to themselves well, maybe, see he was wrong the last time. I turn out to be right, you turn out to be dead, that's not a great equation, and so, you know, the margin for error for me being wrong and you going and staying at a friend's house for two days I think is significantly better than winding up with a severe injury or death for yourself or for your family."
