Data visualization as a discipline lies at the intersection of design, data analytics, and engineering. This tech talk will cover the broad spectrum of what data visualization encompasses across these three major areas.

Data Viz for Analytics
Maxime Beauchemin -- Data Engineer @Airbnb
Superset (previously ‘Caravel’) began as an internal hackathon project at Airbnb to enable employees to explore data with minimal friction. Functionally, Superset makes it easy to connect to data sources, explore data through a SQL interface and a rich set of visualizations, and share insights through dashboards. In this talk we will discuss how a product mindset has shaped the evolution of Superset’s technology stack, UI, and feature set as it’s transformed from a hackathon project to a fully-featured open-source data tool.

Data Viz in Product
Chris Williams -- Data Viz Engineer @Airbnb
Eli Brumbaugh -- Data Viz Experience Designer @Airbnb
In this talk we focus on Airbnb’s Data Design Language System (Data DLS), a project built collaboratively between our Experience Design, Data Visualization, and Web Infra teams. Data DLS encapsulates a set of unified visualization components defined by shared design principles and patterns. We discuss how it provides a unified vocabulary across design and engineering, and enables rapid creation and iteration of consistent data-rich interfaces and visualizations that embody best practices.

The Art of Data
Kristin Henry -- Computer scientist, specializing in Science and Data Visualization, and Generative Art
How do artists use data as a medium? Should a data visualization developer experiment with creating data art? Can a beautiful data visualization even be considered as art? In this brief talk, we’ll touch on these questions and show some examples."
