Gavin Smith (our local beekeeping & compost guru) shows how to make a super-efficient soldier fly compost bin out of everyday components in 30 minutes - realtime!
Soldier flies are fast becoming the 'superfly' of backyard composting, and will voraciously eat through the average household's waste as fast as you can throw it in. These little guys are so nutricious - perfect for chooks, aquaponics fish, and they are even eaten by people in some countries!
Here's how it works: The mother fly enters the bin through the tube at the top, lays her eggs under the lid, and the grubs chew through your compost like a little army! Liquid gold fertilizer drips from the drainage hole and the grubs climb up the inner tube, dropping out the hole at the top, straight into the chookfeeder or fishpond.
