At the time of its release it was the best selling debut album by a female artist, and to this day is still the biggest selling debut album by an African American artist. This album introudced the world to one of the greatest if not the greatest female voices of all times and set the precedence for many other big-voiced diva's debut albums (Mariah and Celine).
