In this lecture dated 2005, The McMinn Centre's Director of Research, Joseph Daniel, presents a talk on the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) procedure - a treatment for hip arthritis. Mr Daniel discusses the historic solutions and outcomes of hip arthroplasty, leading to the development of the Hip Resurfacing and ultimately the BHR implant.

Mr Joseph Daniel explores the history hip joint replacement and development of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR). The early treatments of hip arthritis, including fusion and excision, lead to the development of hip arthroplasty techniques by McKee, Ring and Charnley. Osteotomy, the realignment of the femoral head, was another method used in order to combat the pain of hip arthritis.

The aim of the resurfacing procedure is to improve outcomes in young and active patients and many tests were undertaken using metal, ceramic and polyethylene components. This lead to the modern era of metal on metal hip resurfacing and Derek McMinn began pilot studies in 1991. The BHR was introduced in 1997, as an as-cast device with no further heat treatment. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacings design and metallurgy has not been changed or altered since its introduction. The failure rates were a very low percentage and the RSA cup migration test results favoured long term survival.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends hip resurfacing to young and active patients and the procedure is FDA approved.

The fifteen year results for Mr McMinn's first 1000 BHR patients are now available and can be found in the following talk: http://www.mcminncentre.co.uk/researc....

A fifteen year update from the first ever BHR patient can be found here: http://www.mcminncentre.co.uk/mark-ed....
