This week we are answering a question from a viewer about water conservation. As many of you know even this year out East we often camp for a week at a time without water hookups. When we are out west and boondocking a lot we'll go up to 2 weeks without hooking up to water. So how do we get more water when out boondocking and how do we conserve what we have to last as long as possible?
We did a video about this a couple of years ago when we were dry camping in the desert a lot. You can find it here: https://youtu.be/ufPzfrpficE
When dry camping for long periods of time we have 6-7 gallon containers we keep in the back of the truck. We then fill those at a number of different places (friends homes, national parks, water fill stations, dump stations) and siphon the water into our Airstream freshwater tank. If we are near water(like we've been in state parks on the East Coast) then we will simply keep 4 1 gallon jugs in the Airstream. We will refill those whenever we need to and use them to cook and drink. This really extends how long the water in our tanks lasts.
We also have a composting toilet as many of you know. This not only conserves our freshwater since it doesn't use all that water to flush, but it also allows us to combine tanks so we have double the gray water storage (which is usually what requires us to leave). We also try to shower elsewhere if we can, shower outside using the tea kettle method and of course wash dishes in a tub to collect the water so it's not going down into our tanks. In our previous video, we even talked about how you can wash dishes without water!
Do you do anything to conserve water when camping? We'd love to hear your tips!
