At the start of 2016 I made a video about my hopes for the year. Things did not turn out as I wished. Donald Trump won the electoral college in the US elections despite losing the popular vote. Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders and Norbert Hofer have led a renaissance for disturbing far right politics in Europe. We couldn't even celebrate David Cameron's resignation following the Brexit vote for long as it paved the way for an even more rightwing Tory government led by Theresa May.
There were terrorist attacks across the world in Brussels, Paris, Nice, Orlando, Egypt, Iraq, Germany and many more. The wars in Syria and Yemen have continued to claim the lives of countless civilians.
There seemed to be barely a day go by without a significant cultural figure dying: David Bowie, Lemmy, Prince, Terry Wogan, Ronnie Corbett, Zaha Hadid, Victoria Wood, Leonard Cohen and Muhammad Ali to name just a few.
With all of that going on it is difficult to keep your chin up but that is exactly what we have to do. 2017 looks set to be tough but we have fought against darker forces than these in the past and we will be victorious again.
