The Spratly Islands have been coveted for decades, with many countries staking competing claims. The islands have plentiful fish stocks and are thought to sit atop huge oil and gas reserves. China estimates there are 213 billion barrels of oil. The region remained largely peaceful for years, but that is changing as China grows more powerful.Recent spats between China, Vietnam and the Philippines have seen the Southeast Asian nations turn to Washington for help. Many fear the dispute is leading to a 21st Century Cold War in Southeast Asia.
