A very young Jack Elliott is singing How Long Blues. Even though it is very poor quality, I was told it was a bootleg, I like his vocal range and style. He has a much stronger range in this song and his comments at the end sound so "cool"...ya dig? Jack hasn't morphed into Ramblin' Jack quite yet. He is still in the Village hangin' with the in-crowd and helping Bob Dylan get into the business.

This song version is right at 2 minutes but I let the conversation go on a bit. Jack did a version of How Long on his "Jack Elliott at the Second Fret, Recorded live" but it is a smooth, polished 4 minute+ song. I have the feeling this is a practice run for that spectacular album. It was recorded May 18, 1962, at the Philadelphia club. It was re-released later under the title Hootenany with Jack Elliott later.

I do not wish to offend any Ramblin' Jack Elliott fans with this song. I think it is so interesting to see his abilities and his image changing right before us. He does sound good as a blues singer. He did win his second Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2009 for A Stranger Here! Enjoy.
