This is the first time I've been brave enough to let my urban chickens— four Buff Orpington girls—out in the yard. They are about 20 weeks old, not laying yet. A friend with lots of experience said that the eggs would taste better if they were allowed to free range some. I was a little timid about this, but she advised to let them out just a little while before their normal bedtime and sit in a lawn chair to watch and enjoy them. That's what we did, gently herding them back into their run and adjoining coop near dusk. I believe I'll be doing this often!
