You are not limited in resister selection. This adjustable resister worked well at 435 ohm, and R2 was 30 ohm. It worked at voltages from 5-12. The recommended resisters were R1- 240 ohm (5 watt), R2- 27 ohm (1 watt). 5 windings are recommended on the coil, but I used 7 because I was trying to divide the input voltage to a lower voltage, to lower transistor temps.
