بدبى aka DUBAIS is the interdisciplinary lo-fi ArabFuturist band from cultural activist and artist Nadia Buyse, who has been in at least 30 bands that she can remember (Caldonias, Ghost Mom, Tombstalker, Business Lunch to name a few). Although DUBAIS operates like a band, it often times becomes a vehicle for performance based work and cultural activism in which Nadia uses the tropes of pop music to examine post modern human conditions; focusing on diasporic migration, emotional incapacitations, consumer technologies, hybrid identities, intersectional feminism, and transnational communities. Under this moniker, DUBAIS has released music, published text, taught a multitude of workshops, exhibited work, organized/participated in protests/ demos and performed in more than 20 countries.
After starting the band in a bathroom at an art residency in Antwerp, DUBAIS toured around Europe and then a few months after that she was invited to come to the Republic of Georgia to perform and speak about freedom of speech during the Protests in response to the Gldani prison scandal and the pussy riot trials. Two years later she was invited back to Georgia to participate in the international Peace Festival as a performer and lecturer.
In 2013 DUBAIS became one of the founders of the Music Camp for Girls Bahrain, a camp dedicated to perpetuating self empowerment and social justice through the music education of girls age 8-18 in Manama, Bahrain.
In 2015 DUBAIS released the”Bad Person” EP on Fettkakao, based in Vienna, Austria. Besides this, most of DUBAIS’ music is self released thru Bandcamp.com exclusively, except for small run special edition Merch, CDs, and tapes only available at live shows.
