Hundreds of shops of the ancient covered market in the old town of the Syrian city of Aleppo are burning. The old town of Aleppo, the largest city of Syria and one of the oldest cities in the world, is on the World Heritage List of the cultural organization UNESCO.
The fires may be caused by the heavy bombing and shelling of Friday. In the city when heavy fighting broke out between rebels and government troops. Activists estimate that up to now 700-1000 stores are destroyed.
