Against the wishes of the people of Taiwan, the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) has been working to sign an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with China. They have tried to sell the Taiwanese public the flawed idea that only China can save Taiwan's economy. They are dangerously wrong.

In addition to a complete lack of transparency about the content or process of such an agreement, Ma Ying-jeou himself has lied to the public about it. Ma says:
- - -
In an ECFA, there won't be any conditions such as "one country, two systems."
- - -

In the next part of the ad, Ma says that:
- - -
Since it doesn't affect sovereignty, a referendum is not necessary.
- - -

However, he approves of a non-sovereignty-affecting referendum regarding *gambling* in Penghu. Can you say "Yet another Ma Ying-jeou double standard"?

Getting back to why I say Ma *lied* to the public, listen to what Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (溫家寶) says about an ECFA:
- - -
Promoting the signing of a cross-Strait [sic] ECFA will certainly bring about complete unification of the motherland [sic]
- - -

It will *most certainly* affect Taiwan's sovereignty, and I believe that Mr. Ma knows this very well.

Next, we see Taiwan's Premier, Liu Chao-shiuan (劉兆玄), playing the voters for fools:
- - -
How will be able to sign an ECFA if we tell you what's in it?
- - -

The narrator and text say in the last portion of the ad:
- - -
The DPP believes that to sign an ECFA with China, it must be presented to the public via a referendum. [We are] seeking 100,000 people who are willing to secure Taiwan's last line of defense [by signing a petition to start the referendum].

ECFA requires a referendum!
