The Cloud is Accelerating Toward the Future

NVIDIA currently dominates the cloud IaaS market for high performance computing and deep learning acceleration.

Matrix math is at the heart of deep learning and therefore the underpinning for most current artificial intelligence.

Our Liftr Cloud Components Tracker currently measures that 98% of IaaS dedicated accelerator instance types and sizes in the top four clouds worldwide are based on NVIDIA GPUs, which is why we say it “dominates”. You might say the cloud accelerator market is at peak NVIDIA.

We also track disaggregated accelerators.

Xilinx and Intel are the largest data center FPGA vendors. Recently, both have created new FPGA chips, FPGA-based mixed architecture chips and board-level products specifically for cloud data center use in accelerating AI algorithms.

All these companies want a piece of NVIDIA’s market share. But competing with NVIDIA also requires participating in the right software ecosystems. We’ll say more about that in future episodes of the Liftr Look Ahead.
