As with many small Appalachian communities, Williamson faced challenging health concerns, a struggling downtown, and the question of how to diversify their coal-based economy for many years. In May 2015, community members from Williamson participated in the federal Local Foods, Local Places program, which helps people create walkable, healthy, economically vibrant neighborhoods through the development of local food systems. After building the Williamson Health and Wellness Center downtown, it became an anchor for a number of subsequent investments in revitalizing downtown including a community garden and a farmer’s market.
