The humanitarian crisis in Iraq has now entered its second year. Iraq experienced a dramatic surge in violence in 2014 that triggered successive large-scale waves of displacement. Some two and a half million Iraqi have fled their homes, adding to the quarter of a million refugees from Syria the country is already hosting.

MSF teams strive to assist the populations who have been the most affected and provide medical and humanitarian assistance to areas located as close as possible to front lines.

Mines, booby traps, targeted checkpoints. The extremely volatile security situation is the daily life of Iraqis and the main obstacle our medical teams face on the ground. MSF teams have to constantly monitor the security situation to mitigate risks, but they continue to be committed to bring assistance to those who need it most.

In spite of security challenges, it is still possible for aid organizations to work. But we see too little international assistance compared to the needs of thousands of displaced Iraqis. States and international donors must step up their support promptly to adequately respond to further, impending mass displacements.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare.
