The Norwegian composer Christian Teilman (1843-1909) was from a family with Danish origins. He was born six weeks after Grieg, and outlived him by two years - but unlike his contemporary he is forgotten, at least outside Norway. In his lifetime he was apparently a household name there, and wrote a lot of dance and special-occasion music, as well as an operetta. This piece is described on the score as his 'first composition'. If so, it is very assured, even if the join between the middle and final section is a little contrived.
