Hosting Services

Shared hosting is a type of Web hosting service that allows multiple websites to share a physical Web server and its resources among the hosted websites. Shared hosting logically distributes a Web server to accommodate, serve, and operate more than one website.

Virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual server that the user perceives as a dedicated/private server even though it is installed on a physical computer running multiple operating systems. A virtual private server is also known as a virtual dedicated server (VDS).

Dedicated hosting is when an organization leases an entire server, which is often housed in a data center. The host not only provides the server equipment but may also provide administration and other services. This is considered a more flexible arrangement for the client because unlike in shared server arrangements, it gives the organization total control over the server, its software and security systems. In some cases, a dedicated server can be less expensive. Dedicated hosting is also known as a dedicated server or managed hosting service.

I use shared hosting because it is the least expensive option and gets the job done. Also, most bloggers and small business website owners start with shared hosting. If you think your needs might be greater that shared hosting, discuss your options with a customer service representative.

The price you pay will depend on how many sites you want to host e.g. one or many, and how you decide to pay e.g. month to month or annually. Depending on your chosen payment plan, you may be eligible for cost savings. Also, many low rates are associated with a promotional period, for example, save 30% on your first year. Read the fine print to compare apples to apples for what hosting will cost in year two and beyond.

Note: you’ll want to buy your domain(s) from the hosting provider you choose. If you don’t, you’ll likely want to deal with or transfer your domain to your hosting provider later for convenience.
