There are two types of Canada geese that can be present in Rhode Island: migratory and resident. Migratory geese are here briefly while they migrate, but resident geese stay year-round. In the past few decades, populations of resident Canada geese have been increasing to the point that they are causing significant problems, including nutrient enrichment of water bodies from droppings (about 1 lb per goose per day). One such water body greatly affected by this is Green Hill Pond. The Salt Ponds Coalition along with others are working to ameliorate this issue.
