With one tweet of the referee's whistle, Major League Soccer became a reality. More than 31,000 fans packed Spartan Stadium on April 6, 1996 to watch D.C. United take on the San Jose Clash. John Harkes starred for the visiting squad while his United States teammate Eric Wynalda and defender John Doyle led Laurie Calloway's Clash. The exciting atmosphere was a victory for the fledgling league, and an American star ensured that the first match of its first season would not end without a goal.
