The beginning of modern communications: 50 years ago, the first tele-communications satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral into orbit, relaying TV and phone signals between the US and Europe. 'Telstar' was designed and built at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ. Scientists Walter Brown, Lou Lanzerotti, Carol Maclennan, and Tod Sizer recount the excitement and cross-disciplinary culture of innovation at Bell Labs.
