72 Artists from 54 countries: PRŌTOCOLLUM - A new kind of artists’ journal dedicated to non-Western contemporary visual art

PRŌTOCOLLUM, the new and innovative artists’ journal by Berlin based DICKERSBACH KUNSTVERLAG, presents an international survey of contemporary non-Western art, art narratives and art history. Honouring its motto Global Perspectives on Visual Vocabulary, PRŌTOCOLLUM features contributions by 72 artists and art collectives from 54 countries across Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia in its inaugural issue which has been launched this November 2014. As an anthology of contemporary visual art PRŌTOCOLLUM will appear once a year.

PRŌTOCOLLUM aims to reflect the full diversity of global practice in contemporary visual art with a unique and fresh approach.

Publisher Safia Dickersbach explains: “PRŌTOCOLLUM re-defines the role of art magazines and art journals. Instead of dictating the journal’s contents from an editorial perspective, the invited artists independently select the content they would like to be published in their respective sections of the journal. We will never change, edit or re-contextualise the artists’ contributions — the artists maintain responsibility for the creation of their specific pages. Our aim is to become a presentation space for original ideas and thoughts, a meeting point of sorts for a global selection of artists, we are not only a new art journal but a true artists’ journal.”

PRŌTOCOLLUM’s first issue consists of 240 pages, no adverts, no curatorial self-fulfilment, only the contributing artists’ thoughts, visions and ideas, offering original and credible insights into art scenes around the world. PRŌTOCOLLUM does not want to reflect what art experts, critics and curators think, but rather to let the artists choose for themselves how they want to communicate with the reader, in an unmitigated fashion.

To further its commitment to dialogue unbounded by the borders and current established strongholds of the art world, PRŌTOCOLLUM encourages participating artists to make any written contributions in their mother tongue or any other language they feel most at home to express their thoughts and artistic ideas. English translations or summaries are provided.
