I had this problem from some time before I found out what it was. I ended up pulling the interior AC fuse and the problem went away. So I am assuming it was a bad compressor. Symptoms: Weird idle when the defrost is on, Normal when off!!

Mine used to die randomly, mainly like say going 80+ and push inthe clutch it would die. Or while turning it would die. In my case I had crank walk and had to replace the crank and mainbearing. But this might not be your issue so don't freak ;). I would check the PCV system especially the hose that runs along the head (right side if standing infront of the car). The hose that runs to the PCV valve to the intake tends to get brittle easily, especially at the 90* bend.

It's not normal trust me. I also have friends with ZX2's and theirs don't do this. Mine never used to do this. Trust me it's not normal.

Why do you keep talking about powerband? This is not an auto! And it's not the powerband causeong this problem. There is something wrong with the A/C system makig it cycle too much! I have a A/C delete pully in the mail of I can't figure this out soon!
