Aquarela Dance Group and Samba School was founded in 1986 with the goal of promoting Brazilian culture and Carnaval throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond through costume, music, and dance. Since its inception, Aquarela Brazilian Dance Ensemble, consisting of 6-8 well-rehearsed dancers, has been under the artistic leadership of Maria Amabilis de Souza.

Many other Brazilian dance groups have emerged during the 20 years of our existence, yet Aquarela only has maintained its reputation as the most sought after Brazilian dance company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Aquarela's members take pride in the group's reputation of genuine interpreters of authentic Brazilian music and dance. While most other groups only focus on the glamorous, costumed Rio de Janeiro style of Samba, Aquarela's dancers perform a variety of popular Brazilian dances that showcase the diversity of Brazilian culture, including Afoxé, Samba Reggae, Xaxado, Forró, Pagode, Gafieira, and Axé in addition to the Rio-style Samba. Aquarela is also recognized for its creative and sometimes daring costumes (all handmade by the dancers themselves), yet Aquarela never diverges from its goal of accurately and respectfully promoting Brazilian music and dance, as well as representing our nation and culture and sharing it with the rest of the world.

Due to the extensive training and exposure our dancers receive, several former dancers have been able to go on to form groups of their own with Aquarela's active support. Aquarela has participated in most major ethnic events and celebrations in the S. F. Bay Area including the opening ceremonies of the 1994 Soccer World Cup (hosted by the USA), the Black and White Ball of the San Francisco Symphony, the Goldman Environmental Award ceremony, Macy's Passport Fashion Show Production, game openings of the San Francisco 49ers, and many Carnaval parades in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Hawaii and elsewhere. Aquarela's dancers have also performed with famous musicians such as Carlos Santana on his Supernatural Tour, Daniela Mercury, Beth Carvalho, Grupo Molejo, and Boz Scaggs.

In recent years, Aquarela has increasingly performed out of state and abroad, including extended tours to Taiwan and Singapore. Aquarela also continues, for the past 15 years, to be the exclusive dance ensemble starring at the annual San Francisco Brazilian Carnaval Ball, an event that draws over 2000 spectators yearly. In addition, Aquarela Dance Ensemble and Samba School participates in the annual San Francisco Carnaval Grand Parades in the City's Mission District. Over the last ten years, this event elected four official San Francisco Carnaval Queens and three Kings from Aquarela, the most out of any of the Bay Area's competitive cultural arts and dance companies.
