I shot this video on President Street at Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY on September 12 and 13, 2013. This shows what happens to chickens killed in a religious ceremony called Kaporos or Kapparot. Their necks are slit and then they are stuffed into bags and then discarded. I saw some chickens held over the dumpster while their throats were slit and then tossed in as trash. In this location, there were two truckloads of chickens. Some estimate that there were 5,000 chickens in those trucks, but it could be more. This is a public street and a police officer told me that they have a permit to do this. Aside from the inherent cruelty (in the first video, you can hear a man taunting the chickens by saying "Run away"), the public health risk is astounding. There was blood and feathers all over the sidewalks and streets and when it rained, the blood ran down into the next street.
