STEVE SMITH'S GAFFE

A FLUKE PLAY SPARKED A HUGE UPSET IN THE BATTLE OF ALBERTA
April 30, 1986: On his 23rd birthday, Edmonton defenseman Steve Smith watched in horror as his attempted breakout pass from the side of the cage ricocheted off goaltender Grant Fuhr's left leg and into the Oilers' net. The "own goal" snapped a 2-2 tie with 14:46 left in the third period and Calgary held on for a 3-2 victory in Game 7 of the Smythe Division Final, preventing Edmonton from pursuing a third straight Cup.
