We all depend on higher education to light the way to a brighter future. But Oregon's divestment from public universities is the #1 reason for exploding tuition and student debt as well as financial problems for our schools. To ensure opportunities for this generation and those yet to come, we need Oregon to reinvest in higher education.

LYRICS

This is for the little ones and those yet unborn
We bear this crown of thorns so that you won't have to mourn
One day when you're older and when you're full grown
Looking for your opportunity but find yourself alone

Wholly forsaken by your predecessors, those who came before
Acting deplorably so now we're forced to go to war, settle the score
Up in the capitol's where we'll be marching
Sparking the change by illuminating darkness

It's education that will be saving this nation raising
A new generation of leaders who'll be craving
To solve the ailments of our people through knowledge
But how can they advance if we won't fund their college?

Yeah here's a diploma with chains of debt holding you down
And you wonder why the economy is stagnant? Just look around you hear the sound
Of hopelessness, it multiplies and abounds
And to think at one time our people used to be proud but now...

(Chorus 2x)
Every day I see it and I feel it in my bones
And I do not feel at home because this is out of control
We've got to protect the next generations to come
Our daughters and sons, my God, what have we done?

The struggle we find ourselves in is intergenerational
Education helps everyone, I know y'all it's sensational!
See K-12 and higher ed are two parts of one whole
That's been starved for two decades, this is out of control

You see this age of austerity's scaring me to my core
Yet come what may there's certain things that are worth fighting for
Our little brothers and sisters, cousins, daughters and sons
For them we fight and we'll keep fighting 'til we're dead or we've won

You see we stand for the future, we stand for those who can't stand
We speak for those without voices, and we're here to demand
A plan to fund the school system how it was intended
We can't withstand further cuts, tuition hikes or fund recensions

We've put our jobs and diplomas, livelihoods on the line
To exercise our First Amendment right which now is a crime
But we refuse to walk the line of the cliff to oblivion
'Cause living in fear as an indentured servant is no way of living

The system isn't broken, it's just poor and anemic
But we can do better believe it just dream it like MLK
Conceive it to pave the way, marching to a brighter day
'Cause how we're doing it now, won't sustain us for long

And so for a brighter dawn we've got to keep marching on
Because strong public education makes all of us strong
And so for those who come after we've got our battle lines drawn
To do everything in our power to right these wrongs

(Chorus 2x)
Every day I see it and I feel it in my bones
And I cannot stay at home because this is out of control
We've got to protect the next generations to come,
Our daughters and sons, my God, what have we done?

Education's a public good not a private commodity
An investment in the future that will spur the economy
Once the land of opportunity, what have we become?
Our communities have been stratified tween mansions and slums

And yet an educated populace unhindered by debt
Begets a better society, let us never forget
That revolutionary spirit that once made us great
If we're going down well we'll be swinging for our little one's sake

Unhindered by hate, yet motivated by love
We contemplate the state of things and realize we must rise above
Power concedes nothing without a demand
It never has and never will so for the powerless we stand

Though there may be fear in our hearts faced by a future uncertain
For those who come after we gotta keep relentlessly working
Intensively searching for a solution our restitution
So the little ones won't have to resort to revolution

(Chorus 2x)
Every day I see it and I feel it in my bones
Please don't let us stand alone because this is out of control
We've got to protect the next generations to come
Our daughters and sons, my God, what have we done?
