This is the first video in a series on how I modified my early production Silent Diesel generator so that I could access the compression release lever on the top of the engine cylinder. An access panel was added in later production, but that didn't do me any good. Using the compression release can take a lot of strain off of your starter in cold weather.
If you cut an opening, be sure to create a cover to close the opening before you call the job done. The enclosure helps to manage airflow for cooling the motor, generator, and exhaust, so you don't want to leave the hole open.
Just an update: I've been exercising the generator daily, and using the compression release on the cold days has delivered 100% success for starts! I should have done this a long time ago.
