Last week, we ventured forth to the great white north of Minnesota....with a quick stop at the Mall of America, of course. While we had fun on the trip -- we saw the beautiful autumn colors of northern Minnesota, visited family that we haven't seen in ages, and was reminded of the wonderful people of Minnesota, the trip was for the sad occasion of my Uncle passing away. You can learn more about my Uncle Mac from a post I did while leaving on the trip: http://jonesfamilytravels.com/holding...

We stayed at the Timberwolf Inn (http://www.timberwolfinn.com/) in Marcell, Minnesota in the middle of the Chippewa National Forest. A very rustic lodge with fantastic food and accommodations. We were told we had to be sure and get the walleye dinner, so we of course obliged. By the time we'd made it this far north, we also got a beautiful view of the autumn leaves changing colors. What better place to see them than in the Chippewa National Forest?

I grabbed a couple geocaches (http://geocaching.com) while in Bigfork and of course, became mayor of several locations on Foursquare. Both of these activities really add to a trip. You get to see and learn so much more about the place you're visiting. I would have never stopped to see the loggers memorial had I not been looking for a cache (that I never found, BTW). One cache forced me down an old railroad bed that has now become a hiking/snowmobiling trail with lots of interesting information about the logging history of this area of Minnesota. I also found a huge horseshoe playing field at a Minneapolis park. I'd never seen such a thing!

On our way back to the Minneapolis airport, we, of course, had to stop at the Mall of America. This behemoth of a shopping center never ceases to amaze me. It now has multiple roller coasters in the middle of the mall and so many stores and restaurants that one can hardly keep up. I was especially surprised to see a Best Buy in the middle of the mall! Normally a stand-alone store, only the Mall of America could be large enough to house a Best Buy.

The Mall of America Lego Store was impressive, but not nearly as good as the one at Downtown Disney (no bias here, whatsoever). The wall of miscellaneous Lego parts was very imposing and awe-inspiring, though!

Up for Mass on Sunday and then off to the airport. A very quick trip, but fun.
