Before leaving office, Jose Manuel Barroso helped to broker a breakthrough gas deal. Moscow and Kiev have now sealed an agreement after several hours of tense talks in Brussels. Previous rounds in recent weeks had failed. The deal on supplies and transit to Europe has allayed EU fears of staying in the cold this winter. Here are the key points of the agreement. Kiev will now get gas at a price of 378 dollars per thousand cubic metres. That's a 100-dollar discount on the previous price. Ukraine will have to pay over 3-billion dollars of debt to Russia - by the end of the year. And an advance payment system will be used for future gas supplies.
