Rice University's OpenStax College project is making it cheaper to attend college by publishing free textbooks online for several of the nation's most-attended undergraduate courses. If OpenStax College captures 10 percent of the market with its first five textbooks, it could save 1 million college students in excess of $90 million over the next five years. The initiative, which is backed by the Hewlett Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the 20 Million Minds Foundation and the Maxfield Foundation, published introductory physics and sociology books in June 2012 and will add three more titles in early 2013.
