A new cutter is introduced as I turn a bowl out of a piece of laminated beam

Ok Capn, I have been watching you turn for several months now and my eyes keep going to your headstock, and I gotta ask. That handwheel or whatever that is called on the headstock, what is that made of? It doesn't look like metal like a normal lathe would have. Rather it looks like a piece of wood that you turned to replace the metal handwheel there :)
Have you ever tried turning manufactured wood with a gouge? It's very hard on the edge and requires very frequent sharpening. It also has a very different composition than real wood, and carbide tools hold up to it much better than HSS. It's almost like stabilized wood, which if you've never turned it, dulls HSS ridiculously fast and almost necessitates carbide. Unless you like to sharpen after every cut, carbide is the way to go.
Tendon is actually a correct term. It was used frequently years ago, and included in much of the literature available at the time. Tenon has become the new "standard", although tenon and tendon are very much interchangeable. Google "wood-turning tendon", you'll see what I'm talking about.
@ 1:46 did you really just say tendon? /sigh.....

I cant look at this. Please use a gouge. Thats not cutting, just scraping.

Great video Cap! Keep up the good work! To those out there, remember if you can't say something nice, dig a hole and jump in!!

I'm trying an AVI upload to improve the quality.

I'm overloading a trashy dell laptop. I'll try assembling on a mac and see what happens.
Looking good Capn. I'd also love to see that bowl finished. Maybe start off a future video with a little show and tell. :)
