5G is going to change our lives completely from consumer to industrial applications, this shift will be a once in a decade upgrade of a wireless system because 5G networks are developed with the ambition to support a wide range of highly demanding services and application, by pushing the network capabilities to provide extreme performance, including the support of massively interconnected devices in the context of Machine Type Communication, with 50 billion devices to be connected to the internet by 2020. However, Today, only about 25 percent of the world’s landmass is served by cell towers. The rest of the land—and all of the world’s oceans—have no coverage. To enable 5G massive machine connectivity in remote and rural areas, coverage should be available beyond cell towers. Traditional legacy satellites cannot be the service is extremely expensive and these satellites are 36,000 Km away from the Earth introducing the problem of latency. For 5G IoT to work, low latencies of few milliseconds is a must.
