The right to life from conception to natural death must be defended. The Pope reiterated this in a speech to the bishops of Brazil's Northeastern Region 5, on their Ad Limina visit. Political projects that in a veiled or otherwise explicit way legalize abortion and euthanasia must be opposed in the name of the Gospel. In this sense, the Pope said the bishops have the right to tell their citizens how to use their votes to promote the common good. In this area, he said, politics and faith meet. Furthermore, the Pope noted that a truly human and just society is one which promotes and respects the transcendent nature of the person and allows religious symbols to be displayed in public life.
