Thursday, June 24th, 2010, the internationally renowned Kronos Quartet will honor composer Terry Riley at Music in the Mountains SummerFest. Riley is one of the most significant composers of the 20th century, steeped in jazz as well as traditional Indian music. As a pianist and singer, Riley is still actively performing all over the world. In C (1964) is probably Riley's best-known work and one that brought the minimalist music movement to prominence. Its influence has been heard in the works of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams and in the music of rock groups such as The Who, The Soft Machine, Tangerine Dream, Curved Air and many others. Among his numerous contributions to music, Riley has also scored three feature films and made music for numerous short films. Riley began his long-lasting association with the Kronos Quartet by meeting its founder, David Harrington, while teaching at Mills College in the 1970s.
