Producer Bess Carrick interviews, pilot Dr. Bonny Schumaker, as they fly over the gulf to the Deepwater Horizon site off the coast of Louisiana. In aviation lingo the blowout site is known as "The Source". Their flight takes them over islands spoiled by crude where they see birds nesting on an oily island. Once at "The Source" they watch a boat continually spray dispersants and they observe the research vessel, Gecko Topaz. This vessel is towing seismic instruments around the relief well and blow out sites. We surmise they may be using sonar and seismic equipment to check and monitor cracks in the ocean floor and the conditions around the well's cap.
