Replacement of faulty Price Pfister shower cartridge, which causes a steady drip/leak from tub spout. Replacement part used was Price Pfister ceramic cartridge 974-042 ($27.00) for the Price Pfister 0X8 valve series, which is compatible with the Price Pfister R89-series shower trim line.

***Important*** - before beginning the repair, shut off water to the shower (if in doubt about which shut off services the shower, use the main shut-off valve where water enters your home), and drain water from shower by opening faucets until all existing water in your home's pipes has been emptied.

If the existing shower has been installed during your residence in the home, contact Price Pfister to see if the faulty part is covered under their warranty (they may send you the replacement part at no cost to you).
***Note that as of 2/2014 there is a report that Pfister may send you the replacement cartridge at no cost even if the shower hardware pre-dates your ownership of the home (thanks to commenter Darel M., who shared his experience with Pfister replacing the cartridge at no cost to him - see his entry in the comments section below).***

Note that there may be a small opening on the flange (large plate-like disk around the shower handle); this opening is designed to allow any water trapped behind the flange to flow down and run out on the tiles below the flange. Make sure to position this opening at the bottom of the flange (as if it were at six o'clock on a clock-face). You may also want to seal outer edge of the flange to your shower tile with caulking to prevent water accumulation behind the flange.

***The necessary parts for this repair are not available through retailers like Lowes and Home Depot, but plumbing supply wholesalers do carry them or can order them for you. To find a plumbing supply wholesaler near you that carries Price Pfister replacement parts, visit the search page on the Price Pfister website: http://www.pfisterfaucets.com/WhereTo... and select "wholesale plumbing supply" on the right side of the page.
