The Pope isn't the only high-ranking religious leader turning heads on social networks. Two days ago, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may have joined Facebook.

The page went live on Dec. 13 and a link to it was posted on Khamenei's Twitter feed, which is run by his office.

The new page contradicts the cleric's own edict against Facebook, which he has characterized as part of the West's "soft war" against Iran. In the wake of the 2009 "green" protests that followed the disputed Iranian presidential election, Khamenei banned Facebook and other social-media websites.

It's unclear if this means Khamenei is softening his stance on social media. Perhaps we won't know until he begins wishing his followers happy birthday and Instagraming his dinner.
