How to do a Handstand

Working towards a handstand means mastering the tripod headstand, also known as Sirasana II. This is a staging position that will give you the confidence to move towards the full inversion of the handstand, which is so amazing for your body.
There are some important safety tips before trying the pose. It is important that you make the tripod shape with your arms and your head. So, place your hands on the floor, shoulder width apart. Then, place your head on the floor in front of your fingertips. It is important that the head is in the middle but positioned just beyond the hands. This will give you the sense of a triangle.

Once you have got this base position perfect, lean forward and place your knees on the back of your arms. Now, you are in a tripod headstand and just a few short moves away from a handstand.

As a move on its own, tripod headstand will help to build your core strength. It will strengthen and stretch your abs, as well as your arms. This will also give you the practice in concentration and mental awareness needed for advancing into the full handstand. It also sends a freshly oxygenated blood supply to the head too, so you will feel more enlivened and less stressed after practising this pose! Keep securing this pose and then, when the time comes, you should be able to lift through your legs, then your arms, and into a handstand.
