In the past, schools across England assessed students in a very similar way, referring to national curriculum levels that were linked to a common national curriculum. In September 2014, the Department for Education introduced a new national curriculum that came without a national assessment scheme. This change affected all state schools and over the academic year 2014-2015, schools began to devise their own assessment models for the new curriculum.
