Adapted from the essay "William Gillette's Little Buddies" by Howard Ostrom, and presented by Victoria Maitland http://www.spotlight.com/interactive/... (one of NPLH series 5 guest stars). Holmes may have referred to Watson as "the one fixed point in a changing age", but actor William Gillette performed as Sherlock Holmes over 1300 times, and it was his Holmes who was the fixed point, not Watson. But who were the Watsons he worked with? And what became of them?
