This celebration of the art of tattoo was the brainchild of Karl Brake, the chairman of the art department of Rogue Community College. With such high interest in tattoos by college students, he determined to give students the opportunity to explore the subject of tattoo and to exhibit their tattoo-related art in the Wiseman Gallery at the RCC Redwood Campus in Grants Pass from April 9 -- May 9, 2014.

On April 24, the college held a tattoo pageant at the Rogue Auditorium. Students and the general public were invited to show off their tattoos and tell their stories about them. Three professional tattooists served as judges: Canyon Webb (from Jeff Gogue's Off the Map Tattoo in Grants Pass), Lee Ruthart, and Jason Shad.

First place winner of the pageant was John Meirndorf for his sleeve ink created for honor and family. Britta Bocala took second with her stunning phoenix back piece created as a rite of passage. And Ashley Herzog took third with a colorful shoulder piece as a tribute to her loving grandparents.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Kelcie Donaldson, Irene Kai, Stephen L. Kinnie, and Luanna M. Neal.

Shown in the gallery segment of this video with Jonny Smith's oil on canvas "Nude Sitting" is Ashley Marcotte with a brilliant forearm tattoo as a memorial to her brother.

The Art of Tattoo video is collaboration between two photographers/videographers: Tim Bullard (lead photographer for the Grants Pass Daily Courier) and Randy Johnson, producer of the Internet video series Randy Grubb's Garage. The two artists bill themselves as RandyBull Productions.

RCC's celebration of tattoo was funded by the RCC Wiseman Gallery and a grant from the Josephine County Cultural Coalition.
