Every year we take the time to acknowledge the work and accomplishments of some very special Australians through the celebration of International Volunteer Day on December 5.

More than five million Australians engage in volunteer work each year, and they come from a wide variety of backgrounds which reflects the diversity of the nation. Senator Kate Lundy, Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Citizenship provides an introduction to the moving stories of Iven Spicer and Pat Wagner, who both play a critical role in helping some of Australia's newest arrivals to successfully settle, gain access to services and participate effectively in the community through the department's Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Strategy or IHSS.
