Reverse pressure softening is a technique to soften the areola when breasts become difficult to latch to because of breast fullness or engorgement. This often happens during the first week or two of breastfeeding. Breast massage, taking a warm shower, hand expression or gentle pumping and diuretic foods (eg. green tea, lemon water, watermelon, cucumber) can also be very helpful during this stage of breastfeeding.
