It's day 28 of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which, for those of you completely disconnected, is a challenge in which you either dump a bucket of ice water over your head or donate $100 to ALS research. To date, the challenge has raised more than $88 million for ALS —a dramatic increase from the $2.6 million raised for ALS during the same period last year.
There's a reason why this particular challenge was chosen to raise awareness for a disease most people associate with one of baseball's greatest players of all time. Ice water is meant to simulate what it feels like for your nerves to go into shock. Except after we're done with the challenge, we dry off and change clothes. People with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, have to live with the inability to initiate and control muscle movement. There is no cure for the disease, and only one FDA approved drug currently exists.
The Ice Bucket challenge is about much more than meeting the 24-hour bucket dumping deadline. Still, a deadline is a deadline...and Fusion's Alicia Menendez missed hers. She's been challenged eight times by a ridiculous cast of characters that includes: her sassy niece-in-law, her step-sister, a middle school nemesis, cousin Ron, Fusion's head of marketing, one of her producers, ABC News Correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, and Arianna Huffington.
She missed her deadline and paid the price. Now she nominates Leon Krauze, Cristella Alonzo and Laci Green. You have 24 hours.
