In this video you can see Valaam.
For many centuries it was a spiritual center of northern Russian Orthodoxy, in much the same way as Mt. Athos has been a spiritual center for Mediterranean Orthodoxy. For this reason, Valaam has been known as the "Northern Athos." Valaam has contributed to the spiritual formation of numerous Russian saints, who spent some formative years at Valaam and then later became founders of major monasteries all over Russia.
The organized monastic presence on the Island of Valaam dates back over 1,000 years, prior to the Baptism of Russia (Rus') in 988. In the 9th century two monks, St. Sergius and St. Herman the Miracle-Workers came to Valaam and founded the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, which still is functioning now.

(words by Thomas Moore, transl. by I.Kozlov, folk music)

В долине ветер разнесет;
Другой певец по ней пройдет.
И уж не я, а будет он
В раздумье петь вечерний звон!

Вечерний звон, вечерний звон...
Как много дум наводит он...

V'e-ch'er-n'ij zvon, V'e-ch'er-n'ij zvon
Kak mno-ga dum na-vo-d'it on...
A-ju-nyh dn'ah fkra-ju rad-nom
gd'e ja l'u-b'il gd'e ot-ch'ij dom
I kak ja s n'im na-v'ek pra-s't'as'
Tam slu-shal zvon pa-sl'ed-nij ras!

I skol'ka- n'et - t'ep'er' vzhy-vyh
Tag-da v'i-s'o-lyh ma-la-dyh
L'e-zhat' i mn'e v z'em-l'e sy-roj
Na-p'ef uny-lyj na-da mnoj
V da-l'i-n'e v'e-t'er raz-n'i-s'ot
Dru-goj p'e-v'ets pa-n'ej praj-d'ot
I-ush n'i -ja a bu-d'et on
V-raz-du-m'je p'et' v''i-ch'er-nij zvon!

V'e-ch'er-n'ij zvon, v'e-ch'er-n'ij zvon...
Kak mno-ga dum na-vo-d'it on
